By early August, large areas of South Tyrol's largest glacier, the mighty Übeltalferner, are completely free of snow. Without this protective covering, the ice is exposed to the sun and melts much faster. Looking down at the glacier before sunrise on this day, I think that I am looking at a dying ice giant. The latest scientific studies show that this glacier and many others in the Alps could disappear within the next 50 to 60 years. It is up to us to do something about climate change.
