HEFEX III

The HEFEX III campaign investigated glacier–atmosphere interactions and boundary-layer processes over the Hintereisferner glacier in Austria in August 2025. The campaign was conducted within the Glacier Space Project by Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Innsbruck, with several partner universities.

The main objective was to measure vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, wind speed, and wind direction along the glacier flow line, providing insights into boundary-layer dynamics, atmospheric transport, and energy exchange over the melting glacier. The campaign combined in-situ measurements, remote sensing, and high-resolution numerical modelling. Fixed-wing UAVs and drones equipped with sonic anemometers and temperature/humidity sensors profiled the atmosphere up to 500 m above the glacier, complemented by Doppler lidar and automatic weather stations.
